    Overview

Tilestack is mahjong solitaire, a game for one player with the 144 tiles of a mahjong set: dots, bamboo and characters from one to nine, the four winds, the three dragons, four flowers and four seasons. They start piled up in a layout, and the aim is to take them all off in pairs.

A tile can be taken when no other tile lies on it, even partly, and its left or right side is open. Two tiles with the same face make a pair, and so do any two flowers or any two seasons. Each deal is built up from an empty table by putting pairs back where they could have been taken, so every deal can be cleared; when no pair is left, you can shuffle the tiles still in play up to three times a game.

Before each game you pick one of four layouts, each with its own scoreboard, and one of four themes.

    Tips

    1. Take the tiles that free the most others first: the ends of long rows and the tiles on top of the stack.
    2. When three tiles of a face are free, look before you take two of them: the fourth may be buried under the one you leave.
    3. When all four tiles of a face are free, take both pairs; it never costs you a match.
    4. On the turtle, the lone tiles at both ends keep the middle rows locked: clear them early.
