Overview
Simutrans is an open-source transport simulation in which you set up a transport company and try to make it a success. You carry passengers, mail and goods by rail, road, ship and air, and link up districts, towns, public buildings, industries and tourist attractions into a network of your own design.
Every game starts from a map, either a random one or one made from a height map, and runs for as long as you like, anywhere from 1880 to 2050. New vehicles and buildings arrive as the years pass. You can play on your own or against computer players, but a company whose net wealth stays below zero for three months in a row goes bankrupt and the game ends.
Freight is the easier way in: supply a power station with what it needs, then use the money to serve other factories, perhaps through hubs where goods change vehicles. Freight alone doesn't make towns grow or bring new industries, though. Passengers and mail are harder, because every traveller wants to reach a particular place, such as a factory, the shops in town or a tourist attraction, and won't travel with you unless your network goes there. When passengers like your service, towns grow and new industries open.
