    Overview

Slider is the sliding tile puzzle best known as the 15 puzzle: numbered tiles in a square tray with one square left empty. A tile next to the gap can slide into it, and the aim is to put every tile back in order, from 1 in the top left corner, row by row, with the gap in the bottom right.

Before each game you pick a board from 3 × 3 to 8 × 8, numbered or coloured tiles and one of four themes; each board size has its own scoreboard. Shuffles are random, but only half of all shuffles can be solved by sliding, so the game always deals one of those.

    Plain numbered tiles

    Tips

    1. Solve the top row first, then the left column, and you are left with a board one size smaller. Keep going until only a 2 × 2 corner remains, which solves itself by going round.
    2. The last two tiles of a row are the hard part: put the last one under the square where the second last belongs, slide the second last in beside it, then rotate both up together.
    3. Clicking a tile several squares away from the gap moves the whole line at once. It counts the same moves as sliding them one by one, but saves time on the clock.
    4. Count your moves on a 3 × 3: the hardest shuffles need 31, and most can be done in about 22.
