    Overview

Bit Bang is a numbers game. The goal of each puzzle is to translate the requested decimal number into a binary number in the minimum amount of moves, using four buttons: increment, decrement, left shift (multiply by 2) and right shift (divide by 2, rounded down). You might want to bring a calculator. Assist Mode gives unlimited moves and shows the decimal value of the current number.

You float a little ghost over the buttons and press them. There are 64 puzzles: the first ones need only two or four bits, then eight, and the second half works with 16-bit numbers. StudioGuma, now Bit Bang Games, made it in 2024 with GBDK 2020, GBTD, GBMB and hUGETracker, inspired by a video on counting in binary.

    Buttons

    + (top left)
    Add 1
    - (bottom left)
Subtract 1; below 0 it wraps round to all ones
    << (top right)
Shift left, doubling the number; the top bit falls off
    >> (bottom right)
Shift right, halving and rounding down

    The screen

    Top row
    The puzzle number, in binary
    Hearts
Moves left; every button press costs one, and the puzzle restarts when they run out
    Middle
Your number in binary, a dot for 0 and a bar for 1
    Make
The number to build, in decimal
    Shifts
Do nothing while the number is 0, and cost no heart

    Tips

    1. You start with only as many hearts as the shortest solution needs, so a wasted press means starting over. Work the route out backwards from the target before you move.
    2. To build a number, read its binary digits from the left: start with +, then for each further digit press << and, when the digit is 1, +.
    3. Numbers made mostly of ones are quicker from the top: - on 0 wraps round to all ones (255 in an 8-bit puzzle, 65535 in a 16-bit one), and << then clears bits from the right.
    4. The ghost has to be inside a button's square for A to work. Holding A presses again about five times a second, handy in Assist Mode and dangerous with hearts.
    5. After the last puzzle, A on + and - changes the puzzle number at the top and B plays that puzzle, so you can go back to any of them.
