    Overview

Freedoom is a real-time first-person shooter. You explore a series of levels, in each one trying to find the way to the exit, while an assortment of monsters tries to stop you and you use weapons to defend yourself. Portions of the levels may be inaccessible until you find a particular key, or find a switch to open a passage.

Phase 1 aims for compatibility with The Ultimate Doom mods, also known as plain Doom or Doom 1. If you're new to the game, start with Outpost Outbreak, the first and easiest episode. There is no requirement to play the episodes in order, and each one hides a secret level, if you can discover how to reach it.

Freedoom's name often leads some people to think that the project's goal is to make a free clone of Doom. This is not the case. While compatibility with Doom is a goal, the project is building its own game, and contributors are asked to make sure their work is original and distinct, not just a copy of anything from Doom.

    Tips

    1. Hold the fire key rather than tapping it: nearly every weapon has a short cooldown after you let go, which gives the target time to shoot back.
    2. Shoot exploding barrels when monsters are packed around them. One blast can set off the next barrel in a chain, but stay clear yourself.
    3. Get monsters to hurt each other. A monster hit by another turns on it, so stand where the ones at the back hit the ones in front. A monster can't be hurt by a visible projectile from its own species, though.
    4. Use the ripsaw on flesh worms and stealth worms. They can't attack while being sawed, and backing into a tight corner makes them come one at a time.
    5. Grab the Attuned Force Field Armor Vest early if you can. Armor Boosts add to whatever vest type you already wear, so the better vest makes every later boost worth more.
    6. When you die, pressing Use restarts the level with full health, the handgun and 50 bullets. There is no limit on lives.

    Secrets

    Secret levels

Each episode has a ninth level behind a hidden exit: in E1M3 Waste Disposal, E2M5 Underground Hub, E3M6 Igneous Intrusion and E4M2 Research Complex. Finishing the secret level sends you back to E1M4, E2M6, E3M7 or E4M3.

    God mode and free gear

During play, type IDDQD to stop taking damage, IDKFA for every weapon, full ammo, armor and all keys, or IDFA for the same without the keys. These, and the codes below except IDCLEV and IDDT, do nothing on Mayhem!.

    Walk through walls

Type IDCLIP to turn no-clipping on or off. Freedoom renames the original Doom 1 code so IDCLIP works in Phase 1 too.

    Level warp

Type IDCLEV followed by the episode and level digits, such as IDCLEV31 for E3M1 or IDCLEV19 for the first secret level. It starts a fresh game on that level, so you lose your weapons.

    Power-ups on demand

Type IDBEHOLD followed by one letter: V for the Vanguard Device, S for the Strength Symbiote, I for the Invisibility Cloak, R for the Rescue Operations Suit, A for the Area Survey Map, L for the Low-Light Goggles. Typing the same code again takes it away. IDCHOPPERS gives the ripsaw.

    Full map

Open the map with Tab and type IDDT to show the whole level; type it again to show every monster and item as well, and a third time to go back to normal.
