Overview
µCity (also spelled uCity and pronounced micro-city) is Antonio Niño Díaz's open-source city-building game for the Game Boy Color. The aim is simple enough: build a city. You can begin with one of the predefined scenarios or with a completely empty random map, and the number used as the seed always generates the same map, so a good one can be played again.
Most buildings can be placed by the player, but the most important ones cannot. Houses, shops and factories must be created by the city itself inside the residential, commercial and industrial zones you lay out; the player can only try to attract people. Their happiness depends on services, transport, power and pollution, and the services they expect grow as a village turns into a town, a city, a metropolis and finally a capital.
Fires can break out at any time, and fission power plants can melt down. The only way to lose is to post a negative budget four times in a row, after which the population removes you from your position as mayor. There is no way to win: in the author's words, the satisfaction of a fully developed city should be enough for everybody.
The game uses most of the extra memory added to the Game Boy Color, which is why there is no version for the original monochrome Game Boy.
