    Overview

Led by John Carmack and John Romero, the development team at id Software created a landmark game in 1993 that popularized the first-person shooter genre.

You're a marine, one of Earth's toughest, hardened in combat and trained for action, and you've been transferred to Mars, home of the Union Aerospace Corporation.

The military has been using the UAC's remote facilities on Phobos and Deimos to conduct various secret projects, including research on inter-dimensional space travel. So far they have been able to open gateways between Phobos and Deimos, throwing a few gadgets into one and watching them come out the other. Recently, however, the gateways have grown dangerously unstable.

Then a garbled message arrives from Phobos: something fraggin' evil is coming out of the gateways.

    Tips

    1. With the Chainsaw in hand, 1 goes to the Chainsaw rather than the fist. If you also have Berserk, press 1 again while holding the Chainsaw to get the fists back.
    2. In Doom II, 3 switches between the Shotgun and the Super Shotgun, so you can keep the double barrel for close work and fall back to the single barrel at range.
    3. Monsters that hit each other start fighting each other. Lead a mixed group so the ones at the back shoot into the ones in front, and let them thin themselves out.
    4. Hold Shift whenever you cross open ground or a damaging floor. Running doubles your walking speed and halves the time you spend exposed.
    5. Health Bonuses and Armor Bonuses keep counting past 100%, up to 200%, so they are worth collecting even when stimpacks and medikits would be wasted.

    Secrets

    God mode

Type IDDQD during play. Type it again to turn it off. Like most codes it does nothing on Nightmare!.

    Weapons, ammo and keys

IDKFA gives every weapon, full ammo, armor and all keys. IDFA gives the same without keys.

    No clipping

In Doom and Ultimate Doom, type IDSPISPOPD to walk through walls. In Doom II, TNT and Plutonia the code is IDCLIP.

    Warp to a level

Type IDCLEV and two digits: episode and map in Doom (IDCLEV24 for E2M4), or the map number in Doom II and Final Doom (IDCLEV15 for MAP15). It works on every skill, Nightmare! included.

    IDBEHOLD power-ups

Type IDBEHOLD alone to see the list, then IDBEHOLD plus V (invulnerability), S (berserk), I (invisibility), R (radiation suit), A (computer map) or L (light amplification). The same code again takes it away.

    Chainsaw and a thank-you

IDCHOPPERS gives you the Chainsaw, with the message "... doesn't suck - GM".

    Automap, music and position

With the automap open, type IDDT to show the full level, again for all monsters and items, and a third time to switch back. IDMUS plus two digits changes the music, and IDMYPOS shows where you are standing.

    Secret levels

Hidden exits lead to the secret maps: E1M3 to E1M9, E2M5 to E2M9, E3M6 to E3M9 and E4M2 to E4M9 in Doom. In Doom II, a hidden exit in MAP15 leads to MAP31 Wolfenstein, and one in MAP31 leads on to MAP32 Grosse.

    John Romero's head

The Icon of Sin at the end of Doom II, MAP30, hides John Romero's head on a stick behind its wall. With IDCLIP you can walk through the wall and see it.
