    Overview

Lander2 is a lunar lander game for the Master System by jmimu, the sequel to his Lander1. Your rocket keeps falling, and three small engines are all you have to fight it: you must set it down gently on the landing areas, the flat strips marked with red dots, before the fuel runs out.

Over eleven levels the rocket takes off from a forest launch pad, goes through a short tutorial, then crosses rocky landscapes, hops between landing zones and finally explores a crater. It was written in Z80 assembly as jmimu's entry for the SMS Power coding competition in 2015; this is version 0.C.

    Cheatsheet

    Difficulty

    1
Starts with the take-off and the tutorial; full tank every level; small rocket
    2
Starts at level 3; full tank every level, but it burns a little faster
    3
Big rocket, faster fuel use and stricter landings
    4
Big rocket and one tank for the whole game
    5
One tank for the whole game that burns faster than on 4, and the strictest landing speed

    On screen

    Fuel
The number at the top left, 255 when full; every engine you hold burns it
    Lives
The little figures under the fuel; you start with 5
    Speech bubble
Appears next to the rocket when you are moving too fast to land; its arrow shows which way
    Landing area
Flat with red dots, blinking; some only let you rest before flying on to the next one

    Score

    Each landing
From level 3 on, adds the fuel you have left plus a bonus for the difficulty
    Finishing
Adds bonuses for fuel, lives left and difficulty
    Display
The score is written in base 8, so its digits only go up to 7

    Tips

    1. The side engines push the opposite way from the button: hold Left to drift right and Right to drift left, as the tutorial reminds you.
    2. Speed builds up slowly and dies down just as slowly. Use short taps and start braking well before the landing area, rather than one long burst at the end.
    3. Touch down with almost no sideways drift: the landing check looks at both speeds, and the speech bubble tells you which one is still too high.
    4. Any part of the rocket touching rock is a crash, and the big rocket on difficulty 3 to 5 needs more room in tight caves.
    5. Trying a level again after a crash puts your fuel back to what it was when the level began, so on difficulty 4 and 5 a crash doesn't cost the fuel you burned.
    6. Leave the title screen alone for a while and a short demo plays.
