    Overview

Hello, Commander is a turn-based strategy game for the Arduboy. Your boss, a bunny, has a problem: "Elves", little green men. Fighting them is someone else's job; with communications down, your squad delivers the mail, carrying a message on foot from one bunker to the next past whatever elves are in the way.

Felipe Manga (FManga) wrote it in December 2017 and entered it in the Arduboy community's second game jam, coding and testing it entirely in his own emulator, ProjectABE, before he owned an Arduboy. Soldiers and elves are randomly made characters who gain experience, level up and earn perks; the terrain has hills, water and trees that matter for movement and cover; and it has permadeath with no saves, which the author calls a game-design feature.

    Actions

    Action points
    10 per soldier each round
    Walk
1 point a square, 2 through water, 2 for each step of height uphill
    Shoot
Needs 5 points and ends the soldier's turn; 3 shots, then reload
    Duck
Needs 5 points and ends the turn; damage taken is halved until the next round
    Reload
5 points, back to 3 shots
    Range
2 squares for rookies, more for heavies, more again for assault, most for snipers
    Cover
Higher ground or a tree or object in the line of fire cuts a shot's damage to a quarter

    Soldiers

    Start
One rookie; more join at later bunkers, up to four
    Roles
Rookie at level 1, then heavy, assault or sniper by personality; heavies hit hardest with the shortest range, snipers the opposite
    Experience
Hitting an elf gives some, killing one ten times more, and more for tougher elves
    Level 7
    Heals a little every round
    Level 13
    15 action points a round
    Between bunkers
Survivors heal up to 10 HP
    Permadeath
Soldiers who die are gone; if the whole squad dies, it's back to the start

    Missions

    Goal
Walk any soldier onto the bunker entrance at the other end of the map
    Elves
One more each bunker, up to nine, and they gain experience too
    Elf turn
Elves wander and shoot whoever is in range

    Tips

    1. The bunker is always in the other half of the map from where your squad starts, so head away from the start along the long side.
    2. Shoot from high ground and never at an elf above you: anything higher than the shooter's square in the way cuts damage to a quarter.
    3. Shooting takes all remaining action points, so walk first and shoot last.
    4. Duck any soldier who has to end a turn within an elf's range.
    5. Kills give ten times the experience of hits, so let a rookie finish off wounded elves and become a specialist sooner.
    6. A mission ends once every surviving soldier has reached the bunker. Each one who gets there is safe for the rest of that map.
